Large description:

CD147 is a single chain type I transmembrane molecule of 269 amino acids (Miyauchi et al. 1991, Kasinrerk et al. 1992, Biswas et al. 1995): 18 amino acids as secretory signal peptide, 187 residue long extracellular region consists of two Ig-like domains of the C2-type, 24 amino acids of transmembrane region and cytoplasmic region has 40 residues.

VJ1/9 antibody monoclonal reacts with Basigin or Neurothelin, a transmembrane glycoprotein (50-60kd) of the immunoglobulin super-gene family. Neurothelin is a molecule which is broadly expressed on cells of hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic origin but primarily expressed on leukocytes, erythrocytes, platelets, and endothelial cells. Neurothelin is a blood brain barrier-specific molecule.. Its expression on specific cell types may be regulated by cytokines. CD147 is reported to have a function during embryonal brain development and/or play a role in integrin-mediated adhesion in brain endothelia.
