The ViPrimePLUS Feline Calicivirus RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Feline Calicivirus genome in respiratory samples, conjunctival and oral swab, blood, skin scrapings and lung tissue.
Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a single stranded RNA virus which causes the normally self-limiting oral and upper respiratory tract disease in cats. The viral transmission can be via contact with nasal, oral and conjunctivitis fluids where the virus is shed. The ability of the virus to survive on the dry surface for several weeks contributes to the indirect transmission by contaminated cages and feed. Most of the cats can totally eliminate the virus, while some remain as carriers for life. The common clinical signs are oral ulceration, lesions in the joints that may cause limping, conjunctivitis, pneumonia, fever, excessive salivation, and edema. The indistinguishable symptoms especially from feline herpesvirus infection make clinical diagnosis difficult. In rare, severe cases, the virulent systemic strain of feline calicivirus (VS-FCV) infection may lead to systemic illnesses and hemorrhage, which is often fatal.
