Description
The ViPrimePLUS Bacillus anthracis qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Bacillus anthracis genomes in clinical (e.g. nasopharyngeal and wound swab) or soil samples.
Bacillus anthracis is a Gram negative, rod-shaped bacterium that exists in both active growing form and dormant vegetative spores in soil. The infection causes anthrax, a lethal infection to both herbivorous mammals and humans. The hardiness of the spores in the environment allows effective aerosolization and dissemination, thus making it a potential biological weapon for global bioterrorism threat. Normally, transmission is through airborne or ingestion of infected animal products. There are 4 manifestations of the disease; 1) inhalation anthrax that is highly fatal if left untreated and a concerned cause of intentional aerosol attack, 2) cutaneous anthrax which is responsible for 95% of the reported cases and causes eschar, 3) gastrointestinal anthrax, and 4) the emerging injection related anthrax which infects mainly intravenous drug users.
