Description
The ViPrimePLUS Legionella qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of all Legionella species genomes in clinical samples (e.g. respiratory samples and serum) and environmental samples.
There are about 50 species contained within the Legionella genus. Among them, at least 24 species have been associated with human infection. Legionella pneumophila is responsible for 90% of the cases of Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of acute pneumonia. Legionella bacteria are ubiquitous in the freshwater environment, where they parasitize or form a commensal relationship with free-living, freshwater, and soil amoebae. Thus, many disease outbreaks are resulted from using contaminated water in the air conditioning cooling tower and evaporative condenser as they transmit the pathogen to human via inhalation. The increase man-made aquatic reservoir increases the risk of infection to human. Diagnosis of legionellosis is difficult due to the indistinctive symptoms of common pneumonia. Delayed treatment may lead to mortality.
