Description
The ViPrimePLUS Streptococcus mitis qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Streptococcus mitis genomes in clinical swab samples.
Streptococcus mitis are non-motile, gram positive, mesophilic bacteria of the viridian streptococci (VS) group. Although this bacterium is usually non-pathogenic, it can cause dental infections, strep throat and infective endocarditis in susceptible individuals. S. mitis gain access to the blood stream during operative procedures, binding to platelets via bacterial derived lipoproteins. S. mitis infections are usually treated either with single or a combination of antibiotics, particularly penicillin. The infections that progress to congestive heart failure resulting from recurring emboli often require surgery to replace the damaged valves.
