The ViPrimePLUS Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus RT-qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus genome in fish samples.
Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis Virus (IPNV) is a RNA virus which causes acute contagious disease in salmon and trout. IPN outbreaks are usually associated with high mortality in fry and fingerlings. Signs of infection include dark skin pigmentation, exophthalmia, abdominal distension, haemorrhage and whirling. Whirling behaviour is a terminal sign where infected fish swim in rotating manner about their long axis. Death usually ensues after one or two hours. Clear or milky mucus may be found in the stomach and anterior intestine, a distinctive characteristic of IPN. The virus is shed in the faeces, eggs and sexual fluids into the water, thus spreading the infection in the population. Vertical transmission is possible, too. Surviving fish become life-long carriers and will shed the virus intermittently. Different strains of IPNV exhibit different virulence degree. There are currently 9 different serotypes of IPNV which cause diseases with mortality rates ranging from 10 to 90%. Routine cleaning and disinfection of the hatchery can help prevent outbreaks as well as avoiding mixing of fish from different sites. Rearing the fry in cooler water (<7oC) helps to reduce infectivity and mortality. No effective treatment is available currently.
