Description
The ViPrimePLUS Sheep Pox Virus qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Sheep Pox Virus genome in saliva, nasal swab, skin lesions with scab and blood.
Sheep pox virus (SPV) is a DNA virus which causes a highly contagious disease in sheep. Most of the strains are host specific, while some also infects goats. Mortality rate is 5-10% in local animals in endemic areas but it can reach up to 100% in young and imported animals. Transmission is via aerosol, close contact with animals with ulcerated papules in the mucous membranes prior to necrosis or direct contact with contaminated formites. Symptoms of infection vary from mild to severe. It begins with the onset of fever, salivation, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis and development of macules to papules. The papules may spread to the body. Lesions may develop in the mucous layers of the mouth, anus, nose and eyes, and the internal organs causing systemic signs, such as respiratory difficulty, diarrhoea, depression, emaciation and sometimes death due to necrosis of the papules and membrane mucous.
