The ViPrimePLUS Chlamydophila abortus qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Chlamydophila abortus genome in clinical samples (e.g. vaginal swabs).
Chlamydophila abortus, formerly known as the Chlamydia psittaci immunotype 1, is the causative agent for ovine chlamydiosesis (enzootic abortion of ewes). The infection can also be found in livestock such as cows, goats and pigs. Infection may give rise to abortion in the last 2-3 weeks of gestation, birth of stillborn lambs or weak lambs that do not survive pass 48 hours. However, it is not uncommon to observe the birth of healthy lambs as well. There are rarely any signs before the abortion, except for the behavioural change and a vaginal discharge containing large numbers of chlamydial elementary bodies (EBs) may be observed 24–48 hours before abortion. The C. abortus infection often remains latent in the healthy ewes or lambs, until the animals become pregnant, when the pathogen is activated and it invades the placenta and membrane. In males, C. abortus infections may lead to formation of atrophic testes. Vaccines are available in the market currently.
