Description
The ViPrimePLUS Giardia intestinalis qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Giardia intestinalis genome in faecal sample, food samples or water samples.
Giardia intestinalis (previously known as Giardia lamblia) is a flagellated protozoan that causes major diarrheal disease worldwide. Giardiasis may be asymptomatic or cause acute or chronic diarrhea. It is a zoonotic infection and beaver is the main reservoir for G. intestinalis. The parasite is found in 80% of the raw freshwater water supplies, making it an endemic infection in developing countries with poor sanitation. Infected children in these areas may suffer from chronic diarrhea and growth retardation due to malnutrition. The parasite can be transmitted via sexual intercourse, too. The infectious dose is low in human, where as few as 10 cysts can cause infection. Traditional diagnosis method involves microscopically identifying Giardia cysts or trophozoites in stool samples. The advancement of molecular biology technique has provided a more efficient and sensitive way of detection via real time PCR assay.
