Description
The ViPrimePLUS Cryptosporidium qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Cryptosporidium genomes in faecal or water samples.
Cryptosporidium is a protozoan parasite that infects the gastrointestinal tract of animals and humans. C. parvum and C. hominis are the common human pathogenic species. C. canis, C. felis, C. meleagridis, and C. muris may cause disease in humans, too. Infection with the protozoa causes watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps and vomiting, but generally self-limiting in healthy individuals. The symptoms are more severe and prolonged in immunocompromised patients. This water-borne parasite is usually transmitted by the intake of untreated drinking water and fecal contaminated water system. There is evidence suggesting the possible airborne transmission especially in hospital setting, causing nosocomial infection. As the parasite is resistant to chlorine, a good filtration system and proper water boiling procedure are necessary steps to remove the oocysts.
