Description
The ViPrimePLUS Burkholderia mallei qPCR Kit is a Taqman probe-based real-time PCR assay for the detection of Burkholderia mallei genome in clinical samples (e.g. nasal discharges, lung, spleen, skin tissue).
Burkholderia mallei is a Gram negative bacterium that affects the equine species causing glanders and with occasional infection in goats, dogs and cats. They are commonly found in soil and the disease is endemic in Africa, Asia, Middle East and South America. The route of transmission is via ingestion of feed and water contaminated with the nasal discharge of infected animals. Cutaneous form of infection is also observed, causing farcy. There are various symptoms portrayed by the infected animals, including mucopurulent nasal discharge, lung lesion, nodules in liver and spleen and high fever during acute infection. Inhalation of aerosolised bacteria may lead to septicemia and chronic infection in other tissue organs. Untreated cases resulted in 95% mortality rate, whereas antibiotic treated cases still resulted in 50% fatality rate. Immunity is not developed in recovered equine, thus are still susceptible to future infection.
